Weather report for the interior of the car, July
Region: one sedan, parked lot C, no shade, since 9AM Reporting station: a thermometer we left on the dashboard, which we now consider deployed Broadcast area: everyone who has ever said "it's like an oven in here" and been right
#Current conditions
At time of broadcast the exterior of the region is experiencing a pleasant 84 degrees with light wind. The interior is experiencing 145 and has opinions.
The disparity is stable, self-sustaining, and fully documented, and responsibility for it has been formally assigned: see our annual review of the employee involved, who was rated "does not accept feedback" and has evidently not accepted this either.
#Regional breakdown
The dashboard. The hottest inhabited zone in the region. Surface readings exceed our thermometer's design limits, which we know because the thermometer now reads a temperature in what appears to be a font it did not previously have.
The steering wheel. Currently classified ceremonial — an object that can be looked at and gestured near but not held. Full-palm contact is projected to become survivable at 6:40PM. Until then, drivers are advised to operate using the regional standard two-finger method, alternating hands, in the manner of a person handling evidence.
The seatbelt buckle. No. The buckle is the hottest object in the county. The buckle has been storing heat since 9AM with the patience of a professional and it will spend all of it on the side of your thumb in one transaction. There is no advisory for the buckle. There is only the noise you will make, which the region has heard before.
The water bottle. Yesterday's water has completed its transformation and is now tea made of nothing. Readings put the bottle at 118 degrees. It remains, technically, hydration, in the way that the interior remains, technically, air.
The rear seat. A microclimate. Anything left here enters geological time: crayons achieve liquidity within the hour, chocolate within twenty minutes, and a forgotten library book develops a wave in its pages that it will keep for the rest of its life, like an accent.
#Hourly outlook
2PM–4PM: peak. The region should not be entered. If entry is unavoidable, the recommended procedure is doors open, a sixty-second standoff during which you and the car both radiate, followed by driving hunched forward so your back touches nothing, steering by fingertip, breathing through your mouth like you're being introduced to it.
4PM–6PM: gradual moderation. The air conditioning achieves relevance around 4:15, delivering its first genuinely cold air directly at whichever vent is aimed at nobody.
6:40PM: the steering wheel becomes touchable. This is the region's true sunset and the only figure in this report anyone will act on.
Overnight: the interior returns to ambient and pretends none of this happened. By morning it will feel neutral, even innocent, and by 10AM it will be doing it again.
#Records watch
Today ranks third all-time behind the incident of 2024 (a scented air freshener changed state and the car smelled like a hot candle store for a month) and the incident of 2022 (a sunglasses case on the dash left an image of itself, which remains, a shadow-fossil at the scene of its own conclusion).
#Travel advisory
An oven mitt in the door pocket is the correct response and we are past being embarrassed about it. The mitt is not a joke. The mitt is infrastructure.
#Extended outlook
Worse, then briefly better, then August.
